Narrative:

But the commander of the unit refuses them admission to his unit, and instead asks the boys to help evacuate the wounded to Zaporozhye.

German motorcyclists had already managed to cross Khortytsya, so the Soviet wounded needed guides who knew the island's terrain well. The boys manage to guide the wounded soldiers and commanders away from German eyes, but in the village they learn that the bridge connecting Khortitsa with Zaporozhye has been blown up.

Then Volodka decides to hide the wounded in the plavnyas, and then to transport them by boat to the big land, but the boys had only one boat at their disposal.

On this boat Volodka sneaks to Zaporozhye and gets a meeting with General Filimonov, who led the defense of the city. He informs the general about the Red Army soldiers wounded on Khortitsa and asks Filimonov for boats to ferry them to Zaporozhye. But at this time from the front line comes the message that the Germans blew up the dam of Dnieperges, and this threatened to flood the coastal areas.
