The film takes place in the early 1960s, in the USSR. In a small southern city, a trial of war criminal Berg is taking place. Berg himself managed to escape abroad at one time, and the court was supposed to pass a harsh sentence on him only in absentia.

Witness Semenova also recalled in court Berg's assistant Yuri Zolotitsky, who also escaped punishment and is still hiding from justice to this day.

With the arrival of the Germans, Zolotitsky immediately went over to the enemy side, participated in mass executions of underground fighters and civilians. Semenova reported that she last saw Zolotitsky in 1944 in the Maryinsky hospital, where she worked as a nurse.

Soviet troops entered Maryinsk very quickly, and Zolotitsky, who was undergoing treatment, did not have time to escape. However, soon the hospital came under bombing, and in this confusion Zolotitsky managed to disappear.
