Действие фильма «По данным уголовного розыска» происходит в 1942 году. Отдел по борьбе с бандитизмом (ОББ) московского уголовного розыска получает сигнал о вооруженном налете на квартиру инженера Ювелирторга Ивановского. Убит сам Ивановский, его жена и сын – лейтенант Красной Армии, прибывший к родителям в отпуск, а так же один из налетчиков.

The murdered robber was wearing the uniform of the non-departmental paramilitary security service VOKhR, and at the crime scene the detectives found a cash collection box, which could indicate the bandits' involvement with VOKhR. Thus, the MUR officers are on the trail of the deputy head of security at Yuvelirtorg, Shantrell, who soon after the incident disappeared in an unknown direction.

The detectives were interested in Shantrel's personality and did not understand how a person with such a heroic biography could be connected to the capital's criminal world. In 1941, as a collector, Shantrel took out a large batch of jewelry valuables from the Minsk Yuvelirtorg from under the noses of the Germans.

And soon the detectives got the fingerprints of the murdered robber: he turned out to be a criminal named Borislav Muzyka, who served in the police in one of the occupied areas of the Moscow region under the Germans. Working on Muzyka's connections, the operatives of the criminal investigation and counterintelligence department of the NKVD come across his brother Stanislav, who was a member of an underground group working for the German special services.

Muzyka's gang is eliminated, but Shantrelle is not among the bandits. Then the detectives begin to develop criminals connected with the jewelry. The most authoritative person in this case, Volodya Gomelsky, can clarify the matter, but the detectives understood that as an experienced criminal, Gomelsky would hardly be frank with them about his bandit friends.

For this purpose, they brought in the former recidivist thief "Chervonets", and now a sergeant of the Red Army Mikhail Kostrov, who "tied up" with the criminal world. But the criminals of the capital did not know that "Chervonets" had tied up, therefore, Kostrov, under the guise of a robber who robbed a jewelry store, infiltrates Gomelsky's entourage...
