Narrative:

The action of the movie takes place in the late 70s of the last century. In Moscow, a famous writer Pavel Vetrov is killed by a pistol shot in the back. Detectives from the criminal investigation department learned that on the day of the murder Vetrov met with actor Nika Nikiforov, former athlete Evgeny Shutin and his childhood friend Oleg Perov, with whom he had not seen for several years.

The motive for the murder could be theft, because from Vetrov's apartment was stolen six thousand rubles, but young inspector Nikolai Gurov doubts this version.

From the testimony of neighbors, he found out that on the day of the murder Vetrov came with a red folder, which during the search of the apartment for some reason was not found, so Gurov assumed that the killer was probably hunting for this very folder, and even more for its contents.

Gurov casually tells the artist Evgeny Shutin about the folder, and in the evening of the same day the detective is almost hit by a car. Gurov realized that it was an assassination attempt, and it was carried out by none other than Shutin, to whom he told about the folder in the afternoon.

When Gurov investigated the identity of the artist, he found that he had sold all his property, and was soon going to go on a vacation abroad. But most importantly, shortly before the murder, Shutin had bought a valuable painting from Vetrov's aunt, which he was probably going to take abroad.

Vetrov insisted that Shutin return the painting and was going to expose him, and for this most likely Shutin killed him. Shutin so cleverly set up the case that there was no evidence against him, and in addition managed to divert suspicion from himself to Perov, who planted the money stolen from Vetrov's apartment. But Gurov was one hundred percent sure that the killer Shutin, therefore, decided to provoke his active actions, because nervous, the criminal will begin to make mistakes and give himself away....
