Narrative:

The film takes place in the early 80s of the last century. Returning home after a long treatment, the chief criminal investigation department Ivan Konstantinovich Malych discovers new neighbors in his apartment - the Slepnev family, whose head, Stepan Slepnev, was Malych's ward many years ago.

Twenty years ago, Malych put away a young thief named Slepnev, nicknamed "Razgulyay", for attempting to murder another criminal, nicknamed "Mad". "Mad" himself received the highest measure of punishment for the murder of Slepnev's buddy, for which Slepnev actually tried to take revenge on "Mad".

Trying to personally take the life of another person, even a murderer, does not exempt one from responsibility, and "Razgulyay" received his sentence according to the law.

But Slepnev believed that he had been treated unfairly and harbored a grudge, primarily against Malych, the detective who had caught him twenty years ago.

Now Slepnev was a completely law-abiding citizen, a father of two children, and Malych was pleasantly surprised by the change that had happened to him. But Slepnev was not very happy with such a neighbor. Firstly, because he still held a grudge against Malych, and secondly, he was afraid that Malych would tell his wife about his "heroic" youth.

But Malych was not going to tell anything, on the contrary, he pretended that he was seeing Slepnev for the first time and sincerely tried to get along with Slepnev's family. But Slepnev did not want to forget his old grievances so easily and was suspicious of Malych.

But soon an event occurred that forced Slepnev to seek support from Malych. Their old mutual acquaintance "Madman" was released, whose capital punishment was changed to fifteen years of imprisonment by the people's court at the last moment...
