The film is set in the early 1970s. An attempted robbery occurs in Kyiv. savings banks. The unknown criminals were scared off by something, and at the last moment they did not dare to complete the case and fled. Criminal Investigation Inspector Captain Elizar Boreiko assumed that this was the work of some amateurs who were very scared and would not risk committing a crime again.

But soon the raid was repeated and this time the criminals brought the matter to an end, killing a police officer guarding the savings bank. All attempts by Boreiko to prove that there was no connection between these robberies were unsuccessful and the police commissioner appointed a more experienced criminal investigation officer, Major Sergei Golovko, as the head of the operational group instead of him.

Golovko immediately linked this case with the escape from the colony of a recidivist thief nicknamed "Mole". And he was not mistaken, "Mole" really was among the robbers, but the operatives got only the recidivist's corpse. Golovko assumed that "Mole" was probably wounded in a shootout with a savings bank guard and the accomplices decided to finish him off, thus getting rid of the burden.

Golovko decides to look into the connections of "Mole" in the criminal world and contacts his former accomplice "Gypsy". To Golovko's surprise, the hardened criminal "Gypsy" immediately confesses to everything, and Captain Boreiko hurries to report that the case has been solved. But Golovko has his doubts, and after conducting a second interrogation of "Gypsy", he sees that he is very confused about the details. Golovko soon understood the secret of such a "sincere" confession of the criminal. He committed murder, and understood that by confessing to robbery, he would be able to escape punishment for the murder.

Meanwhile, the "Gypsy" savings bank had nothing to do with it, and Golovko was afraid that the criminals would decide on a new robbery, and suddenly he came up with a plan. Golovko reports the criminals' descriptions to the media, hoping that, having seen them, the criminals would try to leave the city, and when leaving it, they would certainly fall into the hands of reinforced patrols stationed on all possible routes of the bandits' movement.

It worked, and soon the detectives had evidence against one of the gang members who had come to visit the model Zoya Tkachuk. By a strange coincidence, Zoya Tkachuk was also a good friend of Major Golovko. Having learned that Golovko was connected with Tkachuk, Captain Boreiko hurried to report this to his superiors. They are trying to remove Golovko from the case, and now he is redoubling his efforts to find the criminals, because not only his professional honor is at stake, but also the honor of his beloved woman, Zoya Tkachuk...
