Действие фильма «Прощальная гастроль артиста» происходит в конце 70-х годов прошлого века. При попытке задержания двух опасных преступников, погибает сотрудник милиции. Убийце удается скрыться с места преступления, а его подельник вор-рецидивист по кличке «Артист» был задержан, осужден на длительный срок и отправлен отбывать наказание.

In the colony, "Artist" meets a thief nicknamed "Valet", who gives him a reliable tip on how to rob an all-terrain armored vehicle delivering wages to workers at a road construction site in Norilsk. "Valet" explains that his man nicknamed "Shplint" works as a garage manager at the construction site and can easily get "Artist" a job as an all-terrain vehicle driver.

The plan of "Valet" was as follows: on a deserted road "Artist" stops an all-terrain vehicle, pretending to have a breakdown, and his accomplice in a dump truck drives out to meet him and crashes into the all-terrain vehicle, in which there will be guards. Thus, for the case "Artist" will need another assistant, as a driver of the dump truck, for which role "Splint" can be suitable.

Soon after this conversation, "Artist", having escaped from the colony, comes to his accomplice "Sobol", whom he initiates into the plan developed by "Valet". "Sobol" approves this plan and sends "Artist" to Norilsk to prepare for the operation.

Meanwhile, detectives in Norilsk receive information from their source that a wanted repeat offender nicknamed "Artist" has arrived in Norilsk. But the detectives decide not to touch him for now, but to use him as bait to catch a more dangerous criminal, "Sobol", who killed a police officer.

There were legends about "Sobol" in the criminal world: criminals respected and feared him, so the detectives did not have the bandit's fingerprints, nor even his verbal portrait. But now, the operatives managed to lure the seasoned beast into a trap...
