After Stalin's death in March 1953, People's Commissar of Internal Affairs Lavrenty Beria declared a large-scale amnestyThousands of people illegally convicted during the "Great Purge" were released.
However, along with political prisoners, thousands of criminals were also released.
Once behind prison walls, they immediately resumed their old ways, attributing their release to the weakness of the authorities. If the authorities wrote off their previous sins, then they would write off new ones as well. This is how the criminals reasoned, robbing, killing and raping the people who had survived the war.
Thus, a gang of amnestied criminals, led by the thief in law “Baron”, captured a small village on the bank of one of the large northern rivers.
Having killed the local police officer Mankov and robbed the local warehouse, the bandits were about to leave the village. However, the manager of the trading post, Ivan Zotov, whom they had taken hostage, gave the bandits secret information. A boat was soon to arrive at the raid, with a very large sum of money on board.
It is unknown how this story would have ended if it were not for the exiled Sergei Basargin (Luzga). The former intelligence captain, who was serving his sentence for being held captive, did not back down before a gang of criminals. Together with another political prisoner, the convicted Nikolai Skorobagatov, nicknamed "Kopalych", he decides to give the bandits their last fight.

Замечательный фильм, хотя сейчас популярность Сталина в стране огромная и «Холодное лето пятьдесят третьего» подвержено несправедливой критике. Мол, не было репрессий, а если и были то не такие уж и большие. А вообще для своего времени этот фильм имел эффект разорвавшейся бомбы.
