Plot of the series Mole season 1:
The series takes place in Russia in the late 90s. Young detective Sergei Kuzmichev investigates the murder of a visiting Moscow crime bossAn audio recording of his conversation with a local authority, thief in law Kobylin, was found on the murdered man.
The talk was that Seryozha Sambo, that was the name of the Moscow authority, was planning to install his own overseer in the city, and this was not part of Kobylin's plans. It became clear that the Moscow guest had been eliminated by Kobylin's people, and now it was worth waiting for a retaliatory strike.
Kuzmichev points this fact out to his boss, but the boss advises Sergei not to meddle where he shouldn't. And when, a few days later, unknown individuals shot Kobylin right before the eyes of the operatives, the boss blamed Kuzmichev for this. The former army officer, who had fought in the Caucasus, did not want to be a scapegoat and resigned from the force.
In order to feed his wife and little son, Sergey gets a job as a loader. But soon strange things happen to him. First, he is beaten by some unknown people, and then he is kidnapped and placed in some mansion.

But soon Sergei's wife and son die in a fire in their apartment, and he has no choice but to accept the FSB's offer and go to Moscow to carry out an important special mission.
In Moscow, Kuzmichev, on the recommendation of his FSB handler, gets a job in the garage of the influential authority "Watchmaker". Soon Sergey earns the trust of "Watchmaker" and becomes his right hand.

Thus, Kuzmichev becomes the rightful owner of the Watchmaker's empire. But this does not please the friends of the late Watchmaker: former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Chernov and retired FSB General Kopylov, who wanted to get their hands on the Watchmaker's legacy themselves.
A common cause unites the once bitter enemies, and they decide to eliminate the presumptuous upstart. To do this, they conclude a pact with one of the leaders of the Moscow gangsters - Vakhtang Margeladze, who had his own scores to settle with Kuzmichev.
Kuzmichev's obstinacy and independence are not to the liking of his FSB masters either. To replace him, they find a double of Sergei and send him to Kuzmichev's head of security.
В это время Кузьмичев получает приглашение от Маргеладзе приехать к нему на дачу на день рожденье. Сергей понял — это конец, но начальник службы безопасности отправляет сначала двойника Кузьмичева. По дороге двойник с охраной попадает в засаду и погибает.
