Action of the film On the dark side of the moon происходит летом 1980 года в одном из областных центров Узбекистана. В городе совершено дерзкое преступление — убийство сотрудника милиции. Среди бела дня в летнем кафе майор милиции Андрей Пак по прозвищу Большой Кореец, был расстрелян вместе со своим информатором Сабирджоном Артыковым.
An investigative task force headed by the head of the regional criminal investigation department, Lieutenant Colonel Tura Samatov, is sent to the crime scene. The deceased Pak was not only Samatov’s deputy, but also his best friend.
The murder of the deputy head of the regional criminal investigation department, and in the city of Jizzakh, the birthplace of Sharaf Rashidov himself, the first secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU of Uzbekistan, caused a great resonance at the very top of the country. An investigative commission of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office leaves Moscow for Jizzakh. The head of the regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, General Agzamov, advises Samatov to immediately retire, so as not to fall under the hot hand of Moscow detectives, who will certainly want to make a scapegoat as Pak's immediate superior.

But a well-deserved rest was not the dream of the honest and principled Samatov, whom local businessmen and criminals nicknamed "the poor boss." A few days later, Samatov meets Valentin Silov, his former subordinate, fired from the authorities several years ago. Silov, like Samatov, was an honest cop and the criminals, using their connections in the police, set him up.
Valentin did not communicate with Samatov for a long time, since the latter did not stand up for him then, but supported the position of General Agzamov. But now they are in the same boat and decided to stick together. Meanwhile, pressure is being put on Tura. He is summoned for questioning by investigator Narizhnyak, who arrived from Moscow, and his house is under surveillance. And Samatov receives threats on the phone not only against himself, but also against his family. Tura understands that his family is his most vulnerable spot and takes measures to urgently evacuate his wife and son to Tashkent.

Samatov feels that he and Pak, willingly or unwillingly, crossed the path of some "big" people. The main clue in Pak's case was a bottle of cognac that Sabirjon brought to the meeting with Koreyets. An examination showed that the cognac was not factory-made.
Relying on the former employees who remained in the department, Samatov and Silov begin their own investigation into Pak's murder and come upon the trail of a powerful organized crime group engaged not only in the underground production of "bootleg" cognac but also in drug trafficking.
But the most terrible discovery for Samatov is that his teacher and boss, General Agzamov, was in cahoots with the mafia and carried out its dirty orders. And one of these orders was the elimination of Major Pak, which was carried out by a corrupt traffic police officer.
Realizing that Samatov will not stop, the criminals try to bribe him, but in vain, and then they strike at the lieutenant colonel’s most vulnerable spot, his family…
