The lands in Oklahoma that the Osage Indians received were considered some of the worst on the reservation. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, large oil reserves were found in Osage. Thus, Osage County became one of the richest regions in the United States. It had the highest per capita income.
But soon the wealth that fell on the heads of the Osages became their curse. Cases of deaths of wealthy Indians in the district became more frequent, many of whom were simply murdered. And law enforcement agencies, represented by the local sheriff, were in no hurry to investigate these crimes.
The Indians suspected that these killings were the work of "whites" who wanted to exterminate them in order to take over the oil lands. However, the lands in Osage County, like other reservation lands, had their own self-government and the federal authorities did not interfere in their affairs.
It all started when Ernest Burkhart, a former soldier in the expeditionary forces, arrived in Osage. He was seriously wounded in the war and needed work. On the advice of his uncle William Haley, a deputy sheriff and an influential "white man" among the Indians, he gets a job as a taxi driver.
Soon, a rich Indian girl, Molly Kyle, becomes his regular client, and Ernest likes her very much. William Haley, who had long-term plans for this girl, liked the choice of a potential bride.
According to this plan, Ernest was supposed to marry Molly and become the heir to her share of the Osage oil lands. But since Molly was not the sole heir to these lands. After her wedding with Ernest, strange stories with fatal outcomes began to happen to her mother and sisters. And Molly herself was ill with diabetes and took insulin injections from her husband.
She understood who was behind the death of her relatives and even hired a private detective. However, Haley's people dealt with him cruelly. But one day she manages to go to Washington and report everything to the FBI...
