Narrative:

The action of the series "On the trail of the beast" takes place in our time. In one of the capital's nightclubs criminal investigation officers conducted a successful special operation to detain a gang of car thieves. A number of clubgoers were also arrested in the heat of the moment and taken to the police station and placed in the "monkey house".

If the operatives had immediately conducted the necessary investigative actions, they would have realized that among those randomly detained was a wanted criminal - a recidivist Arkharov nicknamed "The Beast".

But instead, the detectives went to celebrate their victory, and in the morning everyone was raised on alarm: one of the detainees attacked the officer on duty, took possession of his service weapon, made a run for it, injuring and killing several police officers.

The second was wounded during the arrest, and as it turned out, was an accomplice of the Beast, nicknamed "Shchuplyy". The wounded Shchuplyy was immediately placed in the hospital under police protection, fearing that Arkharov would not finish off his accomplice as an unnecessary witness. But the Beast went the other way: he kidnaps the son of police captain Anton Karelin and demands in exchange for the boy's life to release Shchuplyy.

Karelin is ready to exchange the criminal for his son, but the head of the department categorically forbids him to do so. Then Karelin takes this step at his own risk and kidnaps Shchuply from the hospital.

However, the Beast, and did not think to give Karelin his son, and barely Shchuplyy is in his car, the one in front of the nose of the operatives slips away. Karelin and young operative Alexei rush in pursuit, and when it seemed that the bandits are about to leave, Alexei opens fire on the wheels.

The bullet hits the target and the car is demolished in the ditch, but when the operatives ran to the car, the criminals were already gone, and on the back seat was a seriously wounded child. Doctors did everything possible, but to save the life of the boy can not be saved, and Karelin was forced to leave the police.

Thanks to his uncle's patronage he goes to work in the investigative committee, but in his new job he is exclusively occupied with the search for his son's killers. Moving on the trail of the Beast, he comes across Olga, the sister of Shchuply and Arkharov's mistress.

At the interrogation, the girl dies unexpectedly and does not give any testimony.And the Beast, who had time to go on the run, returns to Moscow. Having learned of Olga's death, he is full of determination to take revenge on Karelin, and now the detective and the bandit went to meet each other....
