Spring 1945, a few months remain until the complete victory over the enemy, but the first soldiers, demobilized from the front for health reasons, are beginning to return home. The first swallows, as they called themselves, were very excited about meeting their relatives, and were thinking up words that they would say to their loved ones and fellow countrymen when they landed on their native land.

The most worried of all was Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Maksimovich Egorov, who had lost his left arm at the front and was the first of his comrades to set foot on his native soil. But the excitement quickly passed as soon as Egorov got off the train and learned of the harsh and cruel reality that awaited him at home.

His wife died without waiting for her husband to return from the front, and only stoves remained from the village houses. The only thing the soldier had left was Nadya, his daughter, whom Nikolai did not immediately recognize after a long separation.

Together with Yegorov, his friend, Sergeant Ivan Stepanovich Menshikov, whom they met in the hospital, got off the train. Doctors recommended that Menshikov immediately continue treatment upon arrival, otherwise he could lose his sight, but Ivan, who had lost all his loved ones in this war, had nowhere to go, so he went out with Nikolai to support him in this difficult hour for him.

Together with Nikolai, who was soon elected chairman of the collective farm, they decide not to wait until all the men return from the front, but to start rebuilding the village now, so that the front-line soldiers would have somewhere to return to...
