The plot of the movie Seventeen Moments of Spring (1973 movie):
The final months of the Second World War are underway. Nazi Germany is one step away from total defeat and is trying in vain to prevent it. However, all hopes of a new superweapon, which Hitler used to scare the whole world, have not come true.
Soviet troops were already fighting on the territory of the Third Reich itself. And the USSR's Western allies landed in Normandy, thus opening a second front against Hitler.
However, Hitler's entourage still hoped to change the situation by driving a wedge between the Allies. And considering that ideologically the Allies were very far apart, this idea did not seem so fantastic at all.
So the Soviet intelligence received information that some people from Hitler's closest entourage are secretly negotiating with representatives of the United States on a separate peace on the western front.
Who was negotiating with whom and where was still unknown, so many Soviet scouts working deep behind enemy lines were tasked with finding out.
The Soviet intelligence resident in Berlin "Eustace", known in narrow circles as Colonel Maxim Maximovich Isaev, also received such an assignment. In Berlin, Isayev worked under the name of Max Otto Von Stirlitz, a Standartenführer in the SD 6th Division RSHA (political intelligence).
Holding such an important post in German intelligence, Stirlitz had the opportunity like no other to get information about the negotiations. However, even for him this task was the most difficult in his entire work.
To begin with, Stirlitz had to go to the very top of the Reich to carry it out. For if such negotiations were taking place, it was probably by those in Hitler's inner circle. Goering, Himmler, Goebbels or Bormann.
The situation was complicated by the fact that shortly after receiving the assignment, his coder Erwin died. And the radio operator Kat found herself in the hands of the Gestapo. Which even in these last months of the war worked very well and smoothly....
