The plot of the movie:

The movie takes place at the end of the Russian Civil War. The Red Army was crushing the Whites, but there were still many scattered large and small gangs operating across the country. At this turbulent time, fourteen-year-old Misha Polyakov was visiting his grandmother in Ukraine, in the small town of Revsk.

Here Misha met Sergei Ivanovich Polevoy, a Red Army commander. Polevoy was the head of a military train that was idle at the station because of the lack of a locomotive. So he stayed in Revsk for the time being and rented a room from Misha's grandmother.

One day Misha noticed Polevoy hiding a package in their cellar. Curiosity got the better of him, and Misha decided to find out what Polevoy was hiding. The bundle contained an ordinary naval dirk. At that time the grandmother entered the cellar, and Mikhail had to take the dirk with him and hide it in the house.

A gang of a certain Nikitsky, a former tsarist officer, was operating in the neighborhood, terrorizing the locals. No one had ever seen him, but Mikhail had to meet him. One day Nikitsky and his subordinates broke into their yard. The bandits grabbed Polevoy and began beating him, demanding that he give them the very dirk.

Но разговор прервался, сообщением о приближении Красных, и бандиты поспешили ретироваться, забрав Полевого с собой. Миша, который следил за обстановкой, взял в доме кортик и незаметно передал его Полевому. С помощью кортика Полевой освободился от конвоировавшего его бандита и скрылся…

А когда вернулся, рассказал Мише, о странной истории, связанной с этим кортиком. В 1916 году он служил матросом на линкоре «Императрица Мария», который затонул в том же году. За несколько минут до взрыва Полевой оказался свидетелем убийства. Лейтенант Никитский убил другого офицера и пытался завладеть его оружием…
