The action of the film moves from Western Ukraine to the East. After graduating from the Kharkov Metallurgical Polytechnic, Vasily Mandzhura goes to one of the metallurgical plants in Donbass. Due to an acute shortage of engineering personnel, the young specialist is immediately appointed chief engineer of the foundry. Concurrently, Vasily also heads a laboratory for the development of malleable cast iron smelting. Before the revolution, the plant produced such cast iron, but the secret of its smelting disappeared along with the plant's owners...
