The film takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia, in the small town of Ensk. The main character of the film, Sanka Grigoriev, lost his parents early and was soon taken in by his neighbor, Aunt Dasha.
They lived in poverty and in order to somehow help Aunt Dasha feed the family, Sanka went to the river to catch crayfish, which he then sold at the local market.
One day Sanka fished out a postman's bag filled with old letters from the bottom of the river. How it ended up in the river remained a mystery, but the letters that ended up in it turned out to be very interesting, and since there were no books in the house, Aunt Dasha read them to the children on long winter evenings.
Particularly interesting were the letters from members of the missing expedition that set out on the schooner "Saint Mary" to discover new lands in the North. Sanka will learn excerpts from them by heart and remember them for the rest of his life.
