Narrative:
In the second half of the 17th century, mass peasant revolts occurred in Rus', dissatisfied with the increasing oppression from the boyars and landowners. The most massive peasant uprising was led by the fugitive Don Cossack Stepan Razin.
Having escaped from his native land, Stepan Razin leads a detachment of rebellious Cossacks and makes a predatory expedition to Persia. Success strengthens Razin's faith in his own strength, and, having settled down after returning from Persia beyond the Volga, he plans to make a campaign against Moscow to ask the tsar and his boyars for the troubles and suffering of the peasants.
Rumors about the peasant chieftain Stepan Razin quickly spread throughout Rus'; he promises the peasants freedom and land, and the peasants run to him from all over the Russian land.
Razin's army grows and gets stronger, and finally, as planned, he sets out on a campaign against Moscow. Along the way, Stepan Razin takes several large cities: Astrakhan and Tsaritsyn, however, at the walls of Simbirsk, the tsar's troops manage to stop the offensive impulse of the peasant ataman...
