The film takes place in the early 1930s. A worker from the Leningrad plant, Semyon Davydov, arrives at the Cossack farm Gremyachiy Lug to organize a collective farm.
The task for the former Baltic sailor was not an easy one, since the peasantry, bound by centuries of traditions, was not very willing to accept the progressive reforms of the Soviet government.
The wealthy peasants, the "kulaks", were particularly resistant to collectivization. With the active support of the White Guard underground, they still believed in the possibility of overthrowing Soviet power, and if they joined collective farms, it was only for the purpose of wrecking and sabotage, so the Soviet government had no illusions about their re-education.
