Действие фильма «Трембита» происходит после войны в Закарпатье. Местному гуцулу деду Атанасу показалось, что в его колодце завелся «нечистый». Однако внучка Василина, считает, что это может быть иностранный шпион, граница то ведь рядом.

The grandfather carefully made his way to the well, from which emerged the former butler of the local count-landowner who had fled abroad. Bogdan Susik had slightly changed his appearance, shaved off his luxurious sideburns, without which the grandfather did not recognize him at first. Susik reveals a big secret to Atanas: his former master had taken only a small part of his fortune before fleeing.

The Count buried the lion's share of the gold and diamonds in his estate, hoping that he would return someday. The Count put the map of where the treasures were hidden in a small box and threw it into Anatas's well.

Grandfather remembered that when he was cleaning the well, he took out some box. Susik and Anatas immediately set out to search for the precious box and soon found it in a pile of rubbish. But to their great chagrin, the map was washed away by the water. Susik suggests that Anatas dig up all the count's ruins, promising to make his grandfather rich. Anatas thought about it and agreed, because his granddaughter Vasilina is a girl of marriageable age, and she has no dowry.

At this time, the vigilant Vasilina, gun in hand, went out to the outskirts of the village in search of spies. Here she detained a suspicious young man who, as it seemed to her, was rummaging around in the ground. Taking the stranger under arms, Vasilina escorts him to the local chairman of the village council, Uncle Prokop. Seeing that Vasilina was leading the stranger, the entire village gathered at the village council.

The detainee turned out to be Red Army sergeant-sapper Alexei Somov. He explained to Prokop and everyone present that his unit was conducting mine clearance in the area, and as proof, he defused three mines right in Prokop's yard, which someone very resourceful had dragged home and used as supports for a trough.

Prokop asks Alexey to visit and gets straight to the point. His comrade died near Leningrad, and they had a long-standing agreement to marry their children, so Prokop invites Alexey to be his matchmaker. Alexey happily agrees and the matchmaking delegation immediately sets off to see grandfather Anatas. But his granddaughter Vasilina is forced to refuse the matchmakers, because she does not love Mikola, and Mikola himself is in love with Olesya.

Alexey was also upset when he saw that Vasilina's bride, because he really liked the girl who captivated him. Meanwhile, Susik and Anatas plan to excavate the count's estate, but learn that the local youth are going to clear the count's ruins and plant an orchard in its place.

Susik tries by hook or by crook to prevent the young people from going to the place where millions are possibly hidden. He tells the young people about the ghost of a certain count who comes out of the ruins at night to collect the souls of lovers. But the commander of the sapper company sends a detachment of sappers led by Sergeant Somov to help the village youth.

The Red Army soldiers, who were not afraid of Hitler, let alone some ghost, planted TNT charges in the ruins and detonated them. After the explosion, Susik suddenly discovered the coveted chest. With trembling hands, he opened the casket, but instead of gold, there were only shares of some German factories that had long been wiped off the face of the earth and promissory notes from their former owner…
