Plot of the film A Merry Dream, or Laughter and Tears:
In a delirium caused by a high temperature, the young chess player Andrei Popov saw an unusual dream. He saw a fantastic kingdom where the all-chess king Unylio VII reigned, whose power was under threat due to the insidious plans of the card nobility. The grave illness of the crown prince, which had already lasted for six years, plunged the court into deep sadness and became the cause of political instability, which was used by court intriguers.
The main conspirators were the Jack of Spades, tutor of the ailing Prince Chihalya, and his ally, the Queen of Clubs, who enjoyed the king's special favor. Striving for power, they resorted to a variety of methods, from spreading frightening rumors and using dubious medicines to inviting the Jack's influential relative, the famous Queen of Spades, Kargana. Possessing magical abilities, Kargana, with the help of an enchanted tobacco pouch, turned the chess pieces into the likeness of their ancient ancestors, prisoners of the chessboard. However, young Andrei and the crown prince escaped the spell.
