Narrative:

Peasant orphans Yanko and Olesya borrowed a horse from the miller to sow wheat, intending to pay him from the new harvest. However, the greedy miller did not want to wait for the golden ears to grow and demanded to pay the debt immediately. Since the children had nothing but the seed and a cockerel, the miller took away the latter, condemning the poor orphans to starvation.

However, the rooster escapes from the miller and even takes a few grains with him. Rejoicing, Yanko and Olesya are about to plant the grains in the ground, but a vagabond wind wanderer suddenly arrives and takes away these last grains as the children's hope for at least some harvest.

There was nothing left for the poor orphans to do but to go in search of the Wind, for that offered more hope of success than asking the miller for grain. They had to endure many dangers and hardships on their way, but their perseverance paid off. When the Wind heard from Yanka and Olesya about their misfortune, he decides to help the poor orphans, and at the same time to teach the greedy miller a good lesson....
