Plot of the film Afghanets (1991 film):

The film takes place in the late 80s of the last century. The main character of the film is a young soldier Ivan Koval, who recently arrived from training to fulfill his international duty in the Republic of Afghanistan.

In his very first battle, Ivan distinguished himself and carried a wounded comrade off the battlefield. However, instead of an award, Ivan was summoned for questioning by a military prosecutor's investigator, who suspected him of killing a civilian, an old Afghan clerk.

APC in which Ivan Koval was following was fired upon right in the village from the house of this "peaceful" resident, as a result of which a Soviet officer died. But the investigator from the military prosecutor's office did not accept this as a weighty argument in defense of Koval and accused the young soldier of lynching.

For an unlawful act against the civilian population, Koval faces fifteen years of imprisonment, but during the escort to the union, the column falls into an ambush and Ivan ends up in the hands of the dushmans. Then there were painful months of deprivation and humiliation in captivity, from where Ivan and his comrades in misfortune tried to organize an escape.

After this unsuccessful attempt to escape, Koval was sent to Pakistan, where he fell into the hands of local special services. Working with him is former senior sergeant of the Soviet army Stepan, who, like Koval, was once also captured.

Now he has converted to Islam, receives a good salary and soon hopes to go and live in America. He offers all this to Ivan, because the homeland that sent them to shed their blood has abandoned them to their fate. They cannot even return there now, because they are already considered enemies there, and the best that awaits them there is a miserable everyday existence, hard work with a meager salary.

Koval pretended to agree with Stepan and even accepted his offer, but only to survive. To survive and escape, to return home, because his mother was waiting for him at home...
