The movie is set in the last years of the USSR. Fifteen-year-old Lyuska, having run away from home, becomes an accidental traveling companion of an elderly card cheat Konstantin Mikhailovich Bristol, who appeared as a naval general.
Learning that the old man is heading South, Lyuska tearfully asks to take him with her, introducing him as her granddaughter.
However, traveling in the company of a card cheat proved deadly for the fifteen-year-old girl.
