The action of the movie Genius takes place in the 1990s before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The country took the course of transition from socialism to capitalism. Society gradually begins to stratify into the poor and the rich. The ordinary Soviet people disapprove of the new Russians, who are engaged in the usual speculation.
In the recent past they were imprisoned for this, but now these cooperators are growing like mushrooms after the rain. Sergei Nenashev, the head of a vegetable store, is a successful and wealthy man by Soviet standards. He has an apartment furnished with expensive furniture and imported appliances, a prestigious model of Zhiguli. In certain circles, Sergei was known as "Potato Dad".
But as head of the store, Sergei did not plunder the state store, he invested his own money in it. And Sergei took money from these very speculators and cooperators, who had smoothly moved from the party committees to the so-called business.
