The movie is set in 1939, during the period of mass repressions in the USSR. At that time Ivan Sanshin works as a projectionist in the central club of the NKVD in Moscow. Having acquaintances among the officers of the organs, Sanshin was sure that he would not be arrested, but one evening they came to him.

However, Sanshin was taken not to the NKVD cellars in Lubyanka, but to the Kremlin: now Ivan will have to spin movies to Comrade Stalin himself. Having entered the leader's inner circle, he receives the title of NKVD officer, a special ration as an employee of the Central Committee and a salary several times higher than in his previous job.
