1957. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of the former US President, arrives in Moscow on a private visit. Khrushchev was waiting for her in the Kremlin, but Mrs. Roosevelt decided to visit one person first, she had been waiting for this meeting for so long. This person was Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko, a sniper, an active participant in the Battle of Sevastopol, a Hero of the Soviet Union.

In 1942, Lyudmila Pavlichenko was discharged from service due to health reasons and sent to the United States as part of a Soviet student delegation. Lyudmila made a great impression on the First Lady of America, who invited her to live in the White House for the duration of her trip. Mrs. Roosevelt was amazed by this young, fragile girl, who had killed three hundred and more fascists. She really wanted to know the story of this amazingly courageous woman.

And this story began in 1940, in Kyiv. Lyudmila entered the institute and decided to celebrate this event with friends in the evening. Her friends invited her to the cinema, but her classmates suggested going to a shooting range and shooting. The daughter of an NKVD major, and a former hero of the civil war, supported the guys in going to the shooting range and her friends had no choice but to agree.

In addition, Lyudmila decided to compete with the guys in shooting, and although she held a gun for the first time in her life, she managed to emerge victorious, scoring 47 points out of 50. The shooting range instructor, amazed by such a result, reports Lyudmila to the competent authorities.

Ludmila is sent on a voluntary-compulsory basis to a six-month course for marksmen. After the course, Ludmila is sent to Odessa to finish her studies at the institute. This is where the war finds her. As a woman, Ludmila could, of course, avoid the front, but knowing that her marksmanship could come in handy, she rushes into the very heat of war.

After completing sniper courses, Lyudmila Pavlyuchenko ends up in the defense of Odessa, where her father's friend, General Petrov, is in charge. Petrov tries to protect his comrade's daughter by assigning Captain Makarov to watch over her. The captain had a hard time with this brave girl who was always looking for trouble. And soon a feeling arises between Makarov and Lyudmila, but they don't have time to enjoy it: Makarov dies in battle, and Lyudmila gets a concussion.

After being discharged from the hospital, Lyudmila and her unit went to Sevastopol. Soviet troops were forced to surrender Odessa under pressure from the Germans and were ordered to retreat to Crimea. Heroic Sevastopol was to become the outpost of Soviet defense.

Lyudmila has a new boss here, Captain Leonid Kitsenko, with whom Lyudmila soon falls in love again. But again, it is unhappy: during one mission, they are blown up by a tripwire. Kitsenko dies, and Lyudmila Pavlichenko ends up in the hospital again. This time, the doctors were forced to write Lyudmila off the service.

At this time, the threat of encirclement looms over Sevastopol. People are evacuated from the city by submarines and planes, but first of all, important officials. Military doctor Boris Chopak, who has long been in love with Lyudmila since Odessa, manages to get her a place on one of the submarines…
