Hitler's plan to attack the USSR envisaged the capture of Moscow in the first three to four months of the war. Such an important task as the capture of Moscow was explained not only by the fact that Moscow was the capital of the USSR and the "heart of Bolshevik Russia," as the Germans called it.
Moscow was a major railway junction, with main lines to almost every corner of the vast country connected to it, and the loss of such an important strategic facility could have led to catastrophic consequences for the existence of the state.

However, fierce battles for Smolensk, Kyiv and Leningrad delayed the German offensive on Moscow until the end of September, which meant that German plans to take Moscow before the winter cold were finally thwarted.
However, in the first days of the German offensive, this was far from obvious. Having studied the enemy's tactics in other parts of the front, the Soviet command believed that the Germans would attack along the Smolensk-Yartsevo-Vyazma highway, but this time the Germans deviated from their rules.
This mistake cost huge losses and a major encirclement of Soviet troops near Vyazma. The situation was critical, there was only one obstacle in the enemy's path. Mozhaisk line of defense, consisting mainly of militiamen and cadets from military schools.
