Narrative:

Lavrentiy Beria was born in the small Georgian village of Merkheuli to a poor peasant family. Having an inclination for the exact sciences, young Lavrentiy dreamed of becoming an engineer, but the revolution that took place in 1917 changed these plans.

Having become an active participant in the Baku underground, Beria was introduced into the counterintelligence of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which later predetermined his professional career in the security agencies.

The assertive and purposeful Beria quickly moved up the career ladder and in 1931 he was the leader of the entire Transcaucasus, and by the age of 39 he would head the most powerful agency in the USSR – the NKVD.

Beria will remain in this post until 1953. After Stalin's death, the career of the permanent head of the Soviet secret police will rapidly go downhill.

He will be arrested on charges of an anti-Soviet conspiracy to carry out a coup d'etat, and then executed without any trial or investigation. After Beria's death, his name was erased from Soviet history for a long time, and only at the end of perestroika was he remembered as one of the main executioners of the Stalinist regime.

So who was Lavrentiy Beria in reality? A bloody executioner or the most successful manager of the 20th century? The creators of the film "Country of Soviets. Forgotten Leaders" looked into this.
