The plot of the film The Great War (Barbarossa):

On December 18, 1940, Hitler approved a secret Directive No. 21, ставшая позже известной, как план «Барбаросса» — план нападения на СССР.

According to this Directive, it was planned to defeat the Red Army within four months and capture the European part of the USSR along the Arkhangelsk-Astrakhan line.

To implement the Barbarossa plan, three strike groups were created: Army Group North to capture Leningrad, Army Group Center to capture Moscow, and Army Group South to capture Ukraine.

Despite the widespread belief that Stalin received all German plans almost the day after their adoption, information about Germany's preparations for war against the USSR was extremely contradictory. Intelligence did not give any specific dates for the start of the German invasion, and the war that Germany was waging against England inspired confidence that Hitler would not risk fighting on two fronts.

Nevertheless, despite this and the non-aggression pact, the Red Army was fortifying itself and heading towards the western borders. However, the decision to do so was made too late and the sudden German attack caught the troops by surprise.

The first months of the war turned out to be the most difficult in the history of the war. The defeat of the Western Front, the Kiev "cauldron" in which a significant part of the Southwestern Front found itself turned out to be very heavy blows for the army and the state, but not fatal.

After all, despite the bitter defeats of the Red Army in the first months of the war, the Barbarossa plan was not completed within the established timeframe. The war dragged on into the winter, for which the German army was not prepared, and ahead lay the bloody battle for Moscow…
