Narrative:

After the defeat in the border battles, the Red Army retreated to the East, hoping to gain a foothold on the old defensive lines, conventionally called "Stalin Line".

It was a system of defensive structures (fortified areas) built by the Soviet Union before 1939 on the old state border line. However, due to the large section of the front, the line of fortified areas was not continuous, which led to breakthroughs by enemy troops in many areas.

The defense of Kyiv was carried out by the Kiev Fortified Region, and at the beginning of August 1941 this defense was still successful. Theaters and cinemas were open in the city, people went to work, and so far nothing foreshadowed the impending catastrophe.

But at the end of August, beginning of September 1941, the situation changed. The German command decided to postpone the general offensive on Moscow and send part of the forces of Army Group Center to Ukraine.

As a result of this maneuver, a significant part of the troops of the Southwestern Front found itself surrounded. However, the Soviet leadership was in no hurry to withdraw the troops from the encirclement, since in this case they would have had to surrender Kyiv to the Germans, but this delay turned out to be fatal for the entire Southwestern Front.

Up to half a million Red Army soldiers and commanders found themselves in the so-called “Kiev Cauldron”.

Kyiv had to be surrendered. The occupation of the city began. The terrible pages of this occupation were the mass executions of Jews in Babi Yar…
