Initially, the German command did not set itself the task of capturing Crimea. However, soon after the outbreak of war, Soviet aircraft stationed in the Crimea began to launch air strikes against oil fields in Romania that supplied oil to the German army.

Already on July 23, 1941, Hitler was forced to make adjustments to the war plans against the USSR, and outlined new tasks. In addition to the directive of August 12 1941, he demanded as soon as possible to seize the Crimea, which being an enemy airbase, is a threat to the Romanian oil areas.

So the attack on Moscow was postponed, because part of the armies that were supposed to attack the capital, Hitler was forced to throw to the South. Here the main targets of the Wehrmacht were Odessa with its ports and the Crimean peninsula.

It was from Odessa began the heroic defense of Sevastopol, which became one of the most heroic battles of the Great Patriotic War. In June-August 1941, General Oktyabrsky's Maritime Army successfully held off the German offensive on Odessa and prepared for the winter battles.

The defense of Sevastopol was held by a small garrison and the 30th battery of coastal artillery, so the Germans planned to take the city from the get-go, but the heroism with which the Soviet soldiers fought, did not allow the enemy to carry out these plans. And after the Seaside Army entered the city, the enemy's advance was stopped altogether.

So began the legendary defense of Sevastopol, which lasted from October 30, 1941 to July 4, 1942 ...
