Young scientist Jonathan Griffin leaves medicine. And plunges headlong into physics, which attracted him since university. Griffin works hard to create a drug that could make any object invisible. And first of all, a person.
When Griffin's research was coming to an end, his father died, leaving the young scientist with nothing but debts. In order to continue working on his experiment, Griffin went to his university friend, the successful scientist Kemp.
Griffin asks Kemp to let him use his lab. But Kemp, after listening to Griffin's story about the invisible man, considered him just an eccentric and politely refused, citing important work. In addition, Kemp did not understand the practical benefits of Griffin's experiments.

Griffin was forced to continue his work in a miserable apartment in one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city. But Griffin's constant experiments did not give peace to both his neighbors and the owner of the house.
One day their patience snapped, and the neighbors, led by the landlady, decided to put an end to Griffin's research. But when they broke into his apartment, Griffin seemed to dissolve.
However, having accomplished his scientific feat, Griffin realized that no one needed it. The ignorant people, with a mass of religious prejudices, were very frightened by the appearance of the invisible man. And instead of recognition and glory, Griffin received curses.
