Действие фильма «Фронт без флангов» разворачивается в августе 1941 года. Красная Армия под натиском превосходящих сил противника вынуждена отступать на Восток, сдавая врагу города и села. В лесах оказалось много разрозненных подразделений пытающихся выйти из окружения.
Major Mlynsky, head of the 41st Infantry Division's special department, breaks out of the encirclement with a small group of soldiers from the 315th Regiment. In the forest Mlynsky's detachment is joined by other small units of the Red Army trying to break out of the encirclement, and soon Mlynsky's combined detachment numbered more than six hundred men.
Major Mlynsky, as the senior in position and military rank, takes command of the combined detachment and appoints his deputies from among the officers. At the first meeting the command of the detachment decides to leave the encirclement. But sending forward scouts, Mlynsky realized that it will not be easy. The front rolled back far to the East, and now they were in the deep enemy rear. All roads were controlled by the Germans, and it was almost impossible for such a large detachment to pass through them unnoticed, and there were impassable swamps ahead....
At this time, the Western Front headquarters was discussing the issue of using units and units of the Red Army that were surrounded, for sabotage work in the rear of the Germans, as a messenger from Mlynsky arrived at the headquarters. It was very opportune, because Mlynsky's detachment was in the rear of General von Horn's army, which was to make the main strike on Moscow.

But Mlynsky did not wait for instructions from Moscow. Having received information from scouts about a German army base of fuel and lubricants, Mlynsky and his detachment strikes at it, destroying huge stocks of fuel. Upon learning of the sabotage and that a detachment of regular Red Army troops was operating in the rear of his army, von Horn became furious and demanded that the chief of security conduct a punitive operation against the partisans.
But Mlynsky manages to outwit the punishers and get away from them through the swamp. And after a while he again inflicts damage on the enemy. Von Horn orders the immediate destruction of Mlynsky's detachment by the field gendarmerie and police. The front command was puzzled by this decision of von Horn, because they expected that to fight against Mlynski's detachment, von Horn would remove several divisions from the front.
But there was a way out. The front command decided to conduct a counteroffensive with several Soviet divisions on the right flank of von Horn's army. Naturally, von Horn will try to transfer to the right flank of the reserve from the left flank of his army. And to deprive him of this opportunity, Major Mlynsky's detachment was ordered to eliminate the bridge and an important railroad junction, which was under German control and carefully guarded ...
