The film takes place in the mid-80s of the last century. A train departs from one of the stations of the vast country, to which several special carriages are attached. These carriages transport convicts to places of punishment.
The guard of prisoners is entrusted to a guard consisting of military personnel. internal troops. The guard commander is senior warrant officer Paromov, his assistant is senior conscript sergeant Zhokhin. In addition to the commander, the entire guard is made up of conscripts.
Here are both old-timers (grandfathers), for whom this is the last guard duty before the long-awaited demobilization, and there are new recruits for whom this is their first combat duty.
The grandfathers along the entire route of the train morally and physically humiliate the young soldiers, but the senior guard Paromov does not react to this in any way. And what can he change, because "hazing" in the Soviet army is a common thing. All the grandfathers, once were young and suffered humiliation and insults from their senior soldiers, and now it is their turn to "teach" the young.
After some time, these young soldiers will become grandfathers and will also bully new recruits, although now they condemn "hazing".
But one of the convicts, who was caught snitching, was seriously injured by his cellmates, and the warrant officer had to urgently leave the train.
Leaving Zhokhin in charge, Paromov went to accompany the wounded prisoner. But Zhokhin could only command young soldiers, and the old men, who were equal to him in terms of service, did not want to obey their peer, even though he was senior in rank.
Having got hold of some alcohol, the old men began to celebrate their imminent demobilization, and then, when the alcohol had removed the last of its brakes, they began to mock the young men.
But there is a rule that you can't drink where there are combat weapons. One of the recruits, unable to bear the abuse, opened fire to kill...
