Plot of the film Carnival (1981 film):

The film is set in the early 1980s in the provincial Soviet town of Okhansk. The film's main character is Nina Solomatina, a high school graduate who dreams of becoming an actress. The films Nina watches are full of love, beauty, wealth, everything so different from what surrounded Nina in boring Okhansk.

For now Nina plays in the school drama club, but in the future she wants to go to a theatre institute and leave the boring provincial town that she hates forever. Nina was raised by her mother, her father had another family, and she never saw him.

For many years, her father had not been eager to see his daughter either, so Nina, contrary to her mother's opinion, considered him a parasite and despised him. But one day, her mother sent Nina to Baba Zina, Nina's father's mother. At that time, her mother's father, Mikhail Osipovich Solomatin, came to visit her from Moscow. Nina was very happy to meet her father, and he did not seem to her to be such a parasite as she imagined.

On the contrary, her father was also delighted, and upon learning that Nina was going to enter a theatre institute, he invited her to Moscow. Nina did not keep him waiting long, and after passing her final exams at school, she went to the capital. But Nina failed the exam to enter the theatre institute because she could not speak correctly. Soon after Nikita left, Nina was faced with a new misfortune: the landlady of the apartment, due to constant complaints from neighbors, decided to terminate the lease.
