Действие фильма «Любимая женщина механика Гаврилова» происходит в начале 80-х годов прошлого века, в СССР. Главная героиня — тридцативосьмилетняя сотрудница фотоателье Маргарита Сергеевна Соловьева разведясь с мужем, не спешила выйти замуж за первого встречного, хотя без мужского внимания не оставалась.
Both her colleague photographer Pasha and the doctor of the draft board Vyacheslav were in love with her, but Rita could not give preference to any of them, or rather, she did not like both suitors. But one day Margarita finally met the man of her dreams in the person of the forty-year-old ship mechanic Gavrilov, a man with whom she felt like a woman for the first time: weak and defenseless.
Gavrilov was a very decisive man and immediately proposed to Margarita, but on the appointed wedding day he did not show up at the registry office. Rita went to the ship where Gavrilov worked, but the captain assured her that the mechanic had gone ashore. In a heavy and depressed mood, she again returned to the registry office in the hope of meeting her beloved man there, but in vain.

In despair, Rita visits the photographer Pasha, but coming to her senses, runs off to the registry office again. Here she meets a certain Victor, an underestimated genius who was abandoned by yet another wife who underestimated his talent. In the evening, Rita invites Victor to a restaurant and passes him off to her friends and relatives as Gavrilov. But they quickly saw through the false Gavrilov, and Rita herself realized that love is not sought out of love.
Rita went to work in the worst possible mood on Monday morning, but a sudden phone call changed her mood dramatically. Her daughter Tanya called and reported that the elusive Gavrilov had been found, and not just anywhere, but at the police station.
It turns out that the wild gentleman Gavrilov managed to stand up for an unknown woman half an hour before the wedding, sending two "ladies' lovers" to the hospital. The police understood Gavrilov's situation and allowed him to meet with his beloved woman...
