Narrative:

The action of the series "Consultant" takes place during the late perestroika period in the USSR. In the provincial town of Polynsk in the south of Russia, a trial is taking place of the so-called ravine maniac, who has been committing brutal murders of women and children for several years.

In the dock is Yuri Ionidis. Previously convicted of rape, he confessed to all the murders, so no one doubted the guilty verdict of the court, but the consultant psychologist Vyacheslav Shirokov, who arrived from the region, expressed great doubt about the guilt of the defendant.

He believes that the psychological portrait of a maniac as an asocial element is wrong. On the contrary, a real maniac can be a completely socially adapted person, an exemplary family man and even a good social activist.

After listening to the consultant's arguments, the court postpones the announcement of Ionidis' sentence for several days, and soon another murder is committed in the city, with the same style.

Shirokov is involved in the investigation team, but is working on a psychological portrait of the maniac. He collects all the data on similar crimes and makes an unexpected discovery: the maniac has been operating for more than ten years and the geography of his crimes extends far beyond the borders of the city of Polynsk...
