Plot:

The action of the film "In War as in War" takes place in 1944 during the liberation of the right-bank Ukraine. Junior lieutenant Alexander Maleshkin arrived at the front and was appointed commander of the crew self-propelled artillery unit — САУ. The young lieutenant, who has never smelled gunpowder, often becomes an object of ridicule not only for his fellow commanders, but also for members of his crew, who have been through more than one month of war. But one day Maleshkin performs a real feat: he defuses a grenade that was inadvertently removed from the safety by the gunner Domeshek, thus saving the combat vehicle from the explosion of detonating shells.

The regiment commander learns about this incident and, contrary to the battalion commander's decision to remove Maleshkin from command of the self-propelled gun after the battle, rejects this decision of the junior commander. And the battalion commander himself, who took the negligent commander into battle, is removed from his post.

Now Maleshkin had to justify the high trust placed in him by the regiment commander. The battalion in which Maleshkin served was attached to Colonel Dey's tank regiment, which was supposed to drive the Germans out of the village of Sokolovka.

A few kilometers away, the combined regiment deployed in battle formation, but the T-34 of Maleshkin's SPG, which was moving ahead, hits a mine. The mechanic of the driver of the SPG, Sergeant Major Shcherbak, becomes hysterical: he simply refuses to drive the vehicle any further. Then Maleshkin gets out of the SPG and runs forward, dragging Shcherbak along with him. Thanks to this, Maleshkin's SPG is the first to penetrate Sokolovka and engage the enemy.

Having destroyed two enemy Tigers, the SPG suffers damage to its tracks, and its crew, having abandoned the vehicle, enters into a firefight with enemy manpower. In this unequal battle, the cheerful gunner from Odessa, Mikhail Domeshek, dies. Maleshkin's crew stubbornly held the defense until the arrival of the main forces of the regiment, which quickly drove the Germans out of Sokolovka.

After the battle, Colonel Day highly praised Maleshki's personal initiative, as well as his personal courage and the courage of his crew, promising to present everyone with a high government award...
