Narrative:

The action of the film "On the Kiev Direction" takes place in June-September 1941. The plot centers on the fate of three Slavuta brothers: Alexey, Andrey and Ivan. The war found the brothers in Kyiv in different areas of work and fields of activity, but they all remained in their hometown to protect it from the occupiers.

Film director Alexey Slavuta becomes a war correspondent, Major General Andrey Slavuta commands a mechanized corps, and intelligence officer Ivan Slavuta, who returned from Spain on the eve of the war, is busy organizing the Kyiv underground in case the city has to be surrendered to the enemy.

Meanwhile, a difficult situation was developing in the Kiev direction. The heroic defenders of the capital of Soviet Ukraine were not only defending their city, but were also drawing away significant enemy forces intended for an attack on Moscow. The German generals could not calmly advance on Moscow, leaving a large Kyiv group in the rear, so a decision was made to stop Guderian's advance on Moscow and strike the rear of the Kyiv group.

Thus, a threatening situation arose for the defenders of Kyiv, in which the huge Kiev group found itself in strategic encirclement. The first to sound the alarm was the chief of staff of the Southwestern Front, Major General Dead ends.

He believes that the Kiev group has fully accomplished its task, delaying the enemy's advance on Moscow for as many as 70 days, and proposes to immediately begin withdrawing troops from Kyiv.

This meant that Kyiv would be surrendered to the enemy, which the headquarters categorically disagreed with and rejected the decision to retreat. However, after some time, the order to retreat and surrender the city was nevertheless given, but it arrived at the headquarters of the Southwestern Front very late….
