The action of the film "Sweet Woman" takes place in Russia, in the mid-70s of the last century. A village girl Anya (Anna Aleksandrovna Dobrokhotova) leaves the village and goes to work in the city at a confectionery factory. Having settled in the city, the cunning and practical Anya quickly realized that with the help of her beauty she can make a successful "career" here.
And for this you just need to get married successfully. Anya was not interested in ordinary working men and soon she met a medical student, Larik Shubkin. Larik read poetry to Anya, he was an educated and well-mannered young man, from an intelligent family, so different from those rude men who surrounded Anya at work.
However, this was not what Anya liked about Larik, but the large house of Larik’s parents, which was located next to the dormitory where Anya lived.
As a result of this relationship, Anya became pregnant, but she does not intend to marry the frail student and views her situation only as a way to get her own living space. After giving birth, Anya leaves the child in the care of Larik's parents, and continues to search for a more suitable groom.
Soon Larik's parents died, and Anya takes her son to her mother in the village, and she herself returns to the city. One day, when she came to visit a friend who lived in a communal apartment, Anya met Nikolai Yegorovich Kushakov, who was much older than her. But again, of all the merits of Kushakov, Anya appreciated only his large room in the communal apartment.

Having married Kushakov, she began to demand that he, using his privileges as a disabled war veteran, get a separate apartment for them, and Kushakov soon felt that his wife was too selfish and cared only about material well-being. He was embarrassed by the fact that Anya was completely indifferent to the fate of her child, and was not against him staying to live with her mother in the village.
Nevertheless, Kushakov insists that Anya's son Yurka live with them, but even this could not change Anya. She was still indifferent to her son, and was only interested in herself. Unable to bear such a life, Kushakov leaves, leaving Anya an apartment and everything they had acquired during their life together.
Soon Anya accidentally meets Tikhon Dmitrievich Sokolov on the train, who, it seems to her, is the man she has been looking for so long. However, Tikhon quickly sees through this "sweet woman" who is used to the good life and is unlikely to be able to love selflessly at all.
For Anya, this was a hard and useful lesson, because despite what she had strived for so much, she had no one close to her. Even her own son preferred to communicate with his adoptive father more than with her…
