Действие фильма «Сын за отца» происходит в середине 90-х годов в Белоруссии. Успешный пластический хирург и владелец клиники в Москве Виктор (N. Eremenko Jr.) arrives in Minsk to visit his father. Much to Viktor's chagrin, his father Alexander Nikolaevich (N. Eremenko Sr.), also a former plastic surgeon and professor of medicine, now eked out a miserable existence and drank heavily.

From his father's words, Victor understood that he had not fit into the new democratic life. The old honest communist could not watch how the people suddenly became impoverished, how medicine collapsed, which was now unaffordable for ordinary people. Once, Alexander Nikolaevich called a minister who had arrived at the institute a bad word, after which he was thrown out of there altogether.

Viktor suggests that his father go abroad, because with his experience and merits he would be accepted without problems to one of the best clinics in Germany or Israel, or his father could move to him in Moscow. But Alexander Nikolaevich was forced to refuse: he wants to live in his homeland and help his people.

Victor visits the head of the plastic surgery department, Yadviga Zaborovskaya, his father's former lover, who took his place at the institute. After conferring, Victor and Yadviga come to the decision that they need to help Alexander Nikolaevich get out of his current grave condition. Yadviga suggests that Victor open a branch of his Moscow clinic in Minsk, or open a new private plastic surgery clinic, where his father could put his wealth of experience to use.

The next day, Victor relayed the conversation to his father, but at first he refused to serve the fat new bourgeoisie, while his hometown did not even have an X-ray machine. But Victor managed to convince his father that with the money earned from the bourgeoisie he would be able to help his impoverished fellow countrymen. This argument from his son turned out to be quite compelling, so that Alexander Nikolaevich took up the matter, and soon the work on creating the medical center was in full swing.

Aleksandr Nikolaevich became the general director of the center, and the chief physician was Yadviga Zaborovskaya, who, seeing that her former lover was back on top, decided to restore tender relations with him. Using her influence on Aleksandr Nikolaevich, Yadviga introduced him to a representative businessman, Krasyuk. This Krasyuk offered Aleksandr a very tempting and profitable contract, the essence of which was that Krasyuk was creating a club for wealthy people on the territory of his center.

Trusting Yadviga, Aleksandr Nikolaevich signed the contract, but soon learned that Krasyuk's club was a real underground brothel. The old communist, despite the huge kickbacks from Krasyuk, decided to close this den and break the contract with the swindler, but this turned out to be impossible: for the early termination of the contract, he had to pay a huge penalty to Krasyuk, and he did not have that kind of money.

Aleksandr Nikolaevich went to the police, where he learned that this Krasyuk was a local mafioso, repeatedly convicted in the past for financial fraud, and it was almost impossible to fight him according to the law. But the honest communist did not want to compromise with such a criminal and, after consulting with his son, decided to defend himself not only by legal means. Having mobilized his fellow countrymen, many of whom had fought as partisans during the war, Aleksandr Nikolaevich and his son decided to fight back against the seasoned bandits...
