Действие фильма «Американская дочь» происходит в начале 90-х годов. Алексей Варакин приезжает в США, в поисках дочери: пять лет назад жена Ольга вероломно бросила его и уехала в Америку с богатым американцем. Дочери Анне, Ольга сказала, что ее отец умер.
But Alexey found a way to come and met his daughter, who was very happy about his arrival and angry with her mother, who had been deceiving her about her father all this time. Alexey had a decision from a Soviet court in his pocket, which had ruled that Anya should live with him, but in America it had no meaning.
Olga and her American husband David are categorically against giving Anya to Alexey, and they also sue him, which prohibits Alexey from even approaching Anya. But Anya herself, wanting to live with her father, runs away from home and wants to go to Russia with him.
The fugitives understand that they cannot go to the airport, otherwise they will be quickly caught, so Anya advises her father to leave through Mexico. Meanwhile, Olga and David report their daughter's disappearance to the police, and wanted posters with descriptions of Alexey and Anya are distributed throughout the country. And although a generous reward was promised for information about the fugitives, they manage to make a long journey towards the Mexican border, thanks to good people, of whom there are many in America.

But the police still manage to detain the fugitives and return Anya to her mother. And Alexey was sentenced by an American court to four years of imprisonment. Olga visits him in prison and again offers a deal. She said that David can facilitate Alexey's speedy release, but in exchange for freedom, Alexey must sign a document and renounce his claims to his daughter.
But Alexey refuses this time too, and asks Olga to tell Anya that he loves her very much. Some time passes, Alexey is serving time in an American prison, but one day, when he and other prisoners were cleaning the prison yard, a helicopter appeared in the sky above the prison.
To the surprise of the guards and prisoners, the helicopter lands unceremoniously right in the prison yard, and Alexei’s daughter looks out from the open door…
