Narrative:
The action of the film "The Great Citizen" takes place in 1925, in the young Soviet Republic. Only a year had passed since the death of the great proletarian leader Vladimir Lenin, and a serious split was already emerging in his Bolshevik Party. The supporters of permanent world revolution, led by Trotsky, believed that it was necessary to continue the struggle until the complete victory of the proletariat throughout the world, as the great Lenin taught them.
Of course, all the Bolsheviks agreed with this, but many believed that communism should first be built in one, separate country, and then, once it got back on its feet and became stronger, help the world proletariat.
The supporters of this concept explained to their opponents in an understandable way that backward Russia, bled dry by a long civil war, itself needed help. It was necessary to raise the economy: to build factories, plants, railways, power plants and collective farms.
But the Trotskyists-Zinovievists, who called themselves the opposition, were not interested in these reasonable arguments of their party comrades, because behind their concern for the world proletariat, there was hidden an ordinary struggle for power. Occupying responsible posts in the central apparatus, as well as in the localities, the Trotskyists tried to seize all the key positions in the country, squeezing out their opponents from them.
The film "The Great Citizen" shows this acute internal party struggle using the example of one province. Here, the first secretary of the provincial committee and a dyed-in-the-wool Trotskyist-Zinovievite Kartashov tries to drive out the second secretary Shakhov and his supporters from the provincial committee.
In this battle, Shakhov and his comrades managed to achieve a confident victory, but the opponents, defeated on the ideological front, did not surrender completely. They went underground and nine years later made their presence known: sabotage, wrecking and terrorism swept the country in the early 1930s. The Trotskyist-Zinoviev revanchists did not forget comrade Shakhov either, whom they sentenced to death...
