Philadelphia resident Clyde Shelton is attacked by two thugs who brutally murder his wife and daughter right before his eyes. The police manage to arrest the killers, but the evidence collected at the scene does not allow them to obtain an indictment.

So Assistant District Attorney Nick Rice makes a small deal with the criminals. He persuades one of Clarence Darby's killers to testify against his accomplice Rupert Ames, who ends up getting the death penalty. While Darby gets off with a symbolic three-year prison term.

This turn of events does not suit Clyde Shelton. Who knew that it was Darby who killed his wife and daughter. But Rice stands his ground and asks Clyde to reconcile. After all, this is the best thing that could have happened, since if he had not agreed with Darby, both criminals would have been free.

Soon the death sentence against Ames was carried out, but something strange happened to Ames during the execution. When the poison injection was administered, Ames suddenly writhed in terrible convulsions from unbearable pain. The prosecutor Rice, who was present at the execution, was interested in this fact. After all, he knew that execution by poison injection was the most humane and practically painless.

A few years later, detectives discover the body of the second criminal, Darby, dismembered into twenty-five pieces. Refreshing his memory of the case, Rice understands who killed Ames and Darby, and gives sanction to arrest Clyde Shelton. As a person, Rice understood Clyde, but as an assistant prosecutor, he was obliged to investigate this case. But Clyde committed these two murders so perfectly that Rice had no leads or evidence against him, so he advises Clyde to simply confess to the murders.
