The film takes place in the second half of the 20s. Before the revolution, the film's protagonist, Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov, had a decent fortune and position in society. But now the former socialite and leader of the district nobility served in the registry office and did not even dream that he would ever be able to rise to his former heights.
But one day such hope appeared. As it turned out, his mother-in-law hid diamonds worth more than a hundred thousand rubles in their family set. The mother-in-law told Vorobyaninov about this while on her deathbed a few minutes before her death.
Without wasting time, Ippolit Matveyevich went to Stargorod, where their estate was located. There Vorobyaninov met a young adventurer Ostap Bender, who knew many fairly legal ways to make money.
Understanding that he alone cannot pull off such a thing, Vorobyaninov lets Ostap in on it. Now that all the formalities of the business proposal have been agreed upon, the partners set about searching for the mother-in-law's treasures.
This case turned out to be not so simple. 12 chairs, sold at auction, in one of which diamonds were hidden, crawled like cockroaches across a huge country.
