The plot of the series White Guard (TV series 2012)
The movie is set in early 1919, in Kiev. After the October 1917 coup in Russia, Kiev was stormy: the power in the city changed every month. Finally, the Germans managed to drive the Bolsheviks out of the city, and the former Tsarist general Skoropadsky became the head of Ukraine.
Skoropadsky proclaimed the creation of the Ukrainian state and declared himself its hetman. The former tsarist officers, more than twenty thousand of whom gathered in Kiev, hoped that the hetman would gather an army in Ukraine and lead it to Moscow and Petrograd to overthrow the Bolshevik power. But Skoropadsky was busy building a Ukrainian power.
But despite the Ukrainianization carried out by the hetman, he was a stranger to the majority of Ukrainians who supported Petliura. Even yesterday, unknown to anyone, Simon Petliura became a national hero of Ukraine. He gathers a huge army under his banners and rapidly approaches Kiev.
The hetman hoped that the city could be defended thanks to the Germans, but the latter resolutely refused to help the hetman and hurriedly left the city. Then the Hetman announced the mobilization of all officers of the White Guard who were in the city. Officers and juniors of several military schools gladly responded to the hetman's call, hoping that after the defeat of Petliura, Skoropadsky would lead them to St. Petersburg and Moscow.
But the hetman himself turned out to be a hostage of the allies: they categorically refused him further support. Realizing that it was impossible to resist Petliura's army of four hundred thousand with the strength of twenty thousand officers, junkers and students, Skoropadsky fled Kiev together with the Germans and his entire staff.
Upon learning of the dastardly treachery, the commanders of the newly formed regiments were forced to abruptly disband them. The officers were ordered to tear off their insignia and go home. And those units that were on the front line and did not receive information about the escape of the Hetman died in an unequal battle with the Petliurovtsy. Finding themselves without reserves and rears, they were crushed by the huge Petliurov army.
After entering the city, the Petliurovtsy scoured the city in search of officers and seized anyone who looked like an officer. Black days came for the White Guards. Many of them fled the city, hoping to get to the Don to General Denikin. Saying goodbye to their loved ones, the officers of the White Guard promised to return with victory in three or four months. But soon Petliura's power ended and now the Bolsheviks, who were even more frightening to the White Guards than Petliura, were in power for a long time....
