Part one
The film is set in 1920, during the Russian Civil War. By this time, the outcome of the war was virtually certain, and all those who, for one reason or another, disagreed with the Soviet government rushed to Crimea, the last piece of Russia held by the White Guards.

Movie. Part II
tells about the life of Russian emigrants in Constantinople (now Istanbul). The fugitives, thrown onto the Turkish shore, were forced to admit to themselves that no one was waiting for them on this foreign land. Having sold all their valuables, the former generals and officers went to trade in the market, beg for alms, and their wives were forced to sell themselves in order to somehow feed the family.
Such life in a foreign land increasingly forced many to think about returning to their homeland, but remembering their “exploits” during the civil war, not many were eager to voluntarily fall into the hands of their class enemies.
The former corps commander, General Roman Valerianovich Khludov, lost his peace and sleep. As soon as the general fell asleep, he dreamed of the milestone Krapilin, whom he had ordered to be hanged shortly before the Reds' advance. Krapilin had the courage to criticize his commander for excessive cruelty, and the latter ordered the troublemaker to be hanged immediately, although he knew that Krapilin was right.
They fought against Russia, against their own people, so it was impossible to win. Now Khludov realized this even more clearly, so he decided to return to Russia. Khludov realized what awaited him in his homeland, but it was better to accept death honestly for his crimes than to spend the rest of his life in severe mental torment...
