Walking through agony. Episode 1: Sisters

The film takes place in St. Petersburg between 1914 and 1917. In these last pre-war days of 1914, the city is seething with revolutionary sentiments, but two young girls, sisters Katya and Dasha Bulavina, still think little about politics.

However, the merciless whirlwind of the First World War and then the revolution bursts into their frivolous female world. Fate brings the girls together with two officers, Ivan Tilegin and Vadim Roshchin, who later become their husbands.

Telegin and Roshchin, both tsarist officers, accepted the revolution differently. If Telegin sympathized with the Bolsheviks, then Roshchin considered them the main enemies of Russia, against whom it was necessary to fight with arms in hand…

The Walking Through Torment. Episode 2: The Eighteenth Year

The civil war that began soon after the revolution separated Telegin and Roshchin on different sides of the barricades. Telegin volunteers for the Red Army, and Roshchin and Katya go to Kuban, where the former tsarist general Kornilov is forming a volunteer army to fight the Bolsheviks.

However, Roshchin soon understands that he has to fight against his own people, who mostly supported the Bolsheviks. Disillusioned with the White movement, Roshchin leaves the service and goes in search of Katya, with whom he parted when he went to serve Kornilov. And Katya, having received news of Roshchin's death, heads to Yekaterinoslav, but on the way she falls into the hands of the Makhnovists...

The Walk of Torment. Episode 3: Gloomy Morning

In search of Katya, Roshchin arrives in Gulyai-Pole, to the camp of Batko Makhno, but Katya was not there: Batko lost her in a card game to the kulak Alexei Krasilnikov, who took her to Yekaterinoslav. Since at that time Makhno turned out to be a situational ally of the Bolsheviks in the war against the Petliurites, Roshchin became close with the Bolshevik commissar Chugai.

Chugai manages to convince Roshchin, who had become disillusioned with everything, to go over to the Bolsheviks, and soon he becomes a commander of the Red Army. By the end of the civil war, Roshchin receives the post of chief of staff of the brigade, and its commander is Ivan Telegin, the same one with whom his views diverged in 1917...
