The film takes place in the mid-1970s. High school student Zina Begunkova is in love with former pilot Zhenya Pryakhin, but Pryakhin does not reciprocate her feelings.
Zina is not understood by her mother or older brother, her classmates make fun of her, and only one person in the whole world could understand her drama. This person turned out to be a young teacher Vera Ivanovna, who also had a difficult relationship with her lover.
Having met a tearful girl in the yard in the evening, the teacher invites her to live in her house. And Zina, having settled in with Vera Ivanovna, becomes very attached to her, but soon the girl decides that she can secretly read other people's letters and even interfere in the personal life of another person...
